Can cats be autistic?

2022-08-04

I'm sure most people are familiar with autism, and we often refer to children with autism as "children from the stars". Once a child has autism, it is often a huge blow to a family.

Children with autism have a different perception of the world and often do things that are incomprehensible to ordinary people. Sometimes, these children are so unusual that they surprise us by creating works that no one else can do.

But did you know? It's not just humans who can suffer from autism, but also animals. We see some cats always have an arrogant look, do not do anything enthusiastic, and do not like to have any intimate actions with the pooper scooper.

The pooper scooper sometimes hugged it is always a cold look, like a piece of wood, so that people do not feel the slightest warmth, so it is easy to make the cat and the pooper scooper give birth to a sense of distance. Some pooper scoopers will gradually lose their initial patience with cats and are not willing to have any interaction with the cats at home.

This is not because the cat is too high-strung or aloof and does not care about the pooper scooper's closeness, but because the cat is suffering from autism.

It is hard to imagine that a cat can suffer from autism and never think of it as autistic. But cats are just as likely to develop autism without our knowledge as we humans are.

If a cat suffers from autism, it will also face the pooper scooper with a cold face.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you have a good idea of what you are doing.

I. How do you recognize that your cat is not high-strung but has autism?

1. Communication impairment
Like autistic children, cats can show significant communication difficulties at a very young age. When a mother cat gives birth to her kitten, as long as it is born autistic, it is easy to see that it will not be able to communicate normally with its mother and other cats born with the same sibling.

When other cats are playing, a kitten with autism will not easily come up to join them and will even stay in the corner by itself.

2銆丒xpression disorder
Cats with autism are emotionally indifferent and rarely show emotions such as joy, fear, and sadness. Difficulty in properly expressing emotions has always been a typical symptom of autism, which also applies to cats.

When the pooper scooper takes any action that does not cause the cat to change emotionally, the pooper scooper should be alert to the fact that the cat may not be reacting because it does not want to pay attention to you, but because it has autism and cannot give you a response.

3. Restrictive behavior
Once a cat has autism, it is likely to be inclined to its inherent habits and behavior patterns, unwilling to do actions that it has not done before, and unwilling to try new games.

The restrictive behavior of cats can also be reflected in the lack of interest in the new toys bought by the pooper scooper, and the lack of willingness to even taste the new cat meals cooked by the pooper scooper.

4. Repetitive behavior
Cats with autism always repeat some behaviors, such as chasing their tails, licking and biting themselves, and so on.

Of course, normal cats will often repeat some behaviors, and we cannot easily identify whether a cat has autism. However, some behaviors are difficult for normal cats to perform all the time. If a cat repeats behaviors that are not commonly done by normal cats, pooper scoopers should be careful.

Humans with autism also have a speech impediment, but this does not exist for cats. We have difficulty understanding cat language in our daily lives, and many cats do not purr like normal cats, which does not count as a symptom of autism.

Although we all know that there is such a disorder as autism, most people don't have a detailed understanding of why humans develop autism, let alone know why cats have it.

II. So, what causes cats to develop autism?

1. Home factors
When a cat is brought home by a pooper scooper, but the scooper is too busy and does not have much time to spend with him, he will be in a state of loneliness for a long time.

If a cat stays in solitude for too long, it will lack love and care and lose the ability to communicate with the outside world, leading to autism, which is one of the most negligible causes of autism in cats.

2. Genetic factors
Autism is not caused by a mere genetic mutation but is the combined result of some deletion, duplication, or mismatch between chromosomes during the process of meiosis to produce sperm and eggs.
Simply put, autism, although congenital, is not due to a genetic defect in the parents, but rather a chromosomal problem in the process of conceiving the next generation, which ultimately leads to kittens suffering from autism from birth.

3銆両nfection during pregnancy
The mother was infected with a virus during pregnancy, resulting in damage to the kitten's brain development when it was still a fetus, and eventually, it was born with autism.

4銆丅rain injury
The mother's brain is underdeveloped due to distress or miscarriage during pregnancy, the kitten's brain is injured due to premature birth or difficult birth, and the kitten's brain is injured due to encephalitis and meningitis when it is young, which will increase the chance of autism.
Although we know the causes of autism in cats, we do not have a cure for it and the disease is a challenge for which no solution has been found among humans.

The only thing we can do is try to keep our cat in a relatively stable and safe environment, reduce external stimulation and spend more time with her, and we should also avoid letting her have offspring.

When we humans have autism, we still need to learn how to be independent, otherwise, there is no way to live alone when our loved ones are gone. But this is not necessary for cats, as long as they can find a loving pooper scooper, and they do not cause any harm to their pooper scooper because of autism, then they can spend their lives happily.

The cat's high spirits are not all true, autism can also lead to a cold personality, so the pooper scooper should not misunderstand it, and should not leave it behind.
